Cheap Smartphone

The OnePlus 6 is a very good smartphone, nice and cheap - the best you can buy for its price. However, the sacrifices for that "low" price are clearer than before.

The OnePlus 6 is an excellent cell phone that is relatively cheap but has sacrifices that prevent it from competing with the best on the market, phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S9 Plus, the LG G7 ThinQ and the iPhone X.

This OnePlus 6 cell phone is simply a clear evolution of its predecessors, and achieves an excellent balance and price.

The OnePlus 6 is the nicest cell phone that the company has manufactured, it still has the same impressive fast battery charge that we have enjoyed so much in OnePlus phones, it keeps the traditional hearing aid connector (3.5 mm), it offers an excellent performance, a very good experience and although it increased its price by $30, it is still cheaper than the flagship phones of its rivals.

However, the OnePlus 6 sacrifices functions and features that in this generation are more evident because they have become much more common in the market. For example, although the company says it is resistant to water (mainly rain, and splashes), OnePlus says it is not suitable for being submerged in water and does not have a certification (IP67 or IP68).

Also, it does not have a double horn and its only horn is average, its cameras are behind the best on the market, its battery life is lower than its predecessor and is still not compatible with CDMA, a slot for microSD card, or the technical support of large companies.

The OnePlus 6 is an excellent cell phone that is worth buying, but there are more complete cell phones on the market, although they cost more.

The first thing you will notice about the OnePlus 6 is its eyebrow or notch, very similar to that of the LG G7 ThinQ, the Huawei P20 Pro and iPhone X.

Although the eyebrow is smaller than the iPhone X and is more similar to the LG G7 ThinQ, it is not for everyone.OnePlus seems to understand this and allows you to hide this eyebrow through software.

OnePlus 6 Screen Size and display

OnePlus 6 Galaxy S9 Plus LG G7 ThinQ iPhone X Huawei P20 Pro OnePlus 5T
screen 6.28 inches (AMOLED) 6.2 inches 6.1 inches (LCD) 5.8 inches (OLED) 6.1 inches (OLED) 6 inches
Size 155.7x75.4x7.75mm 158.1X73.8X8.5mm 153.2x71.9x8.2mm 143.6x70.9x7.7mm 155x73.9x7.8mm 156.1x75x7.3mm
Weight 177 grams 189 grams 162 grams 174 grams 185 grams 162 grams

However, thanks to this eyebrow, the company was able to integrate a 6.28-inch screen that is larger than the 6-inch screen of the OnePlus 5T but does not increase the size of the new phone (155.7×75. 4×7.75mm vs. 156.1x75x7.3mm).

The bottom bezel of the OnePlus 6 is the largest of all, but it is smaller than the OnePlus 5T. The screen has curved corners and the glass has a slight curvature on the screen that makes it look more modern and makes it feel good in the hand.

The eyebrow does not impact the experience we have with the cell phone since the apps are adjusted so that this eyebrow disappears when we open a video or photo, or to go unnoticed when we open an app. In the options, you can choose to open the apps in full screen (using the screen space next to the left) to get more out of the screen, but there the eyebrow can change content.

The back of OnePlus 6 is made of glass, instead of metal like the OnePlus 5T, 5, 3 and 3T. The OnePlus 6 bright black (Mirror Black) is the one that shows this glass more, as it more easily reflects the light and attracts more traces. In a way, this colour resembles the ceramic back that the company used with the OnePlus X and looks more elegant than before.

The OnePlus 6 black colour (Midnight Black) is less bright and attracts fewer fingerprints, but I think it can be a bit of elegance and end up looking much more like its predecessor. On the other hand, the white one (Silk White) does not even seem to be glass and it helps even more to reduce the marks that your fingers can leave on your body.

The body of the OnePlus 6 in black mirror colour is bright and very attractive.

Despite this change of materials in the back, the edge of the OnePlus 6 smartphone is still made of metal, which is good because it offers durability. However, as its backside is glass it ends up being more fragile than its predecessors.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 6 feels good in the hand, its buttons feel as solid as its predecessor and maintains its traditional headphone jack (3.5mm), the USB-C port with the same fast charge Dash Charge of its predecessors (without any change) and a speaker located at the bottom.

The horn is one of the weaknesses of the OnePlus 6, as it is very average and falls far behind what is offered by dual-speaker phones, such as the Galaxy S9, the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the iPhone X.

The slider that allows you to change the ringtone status as a silence and do not disturb is now located on the right edge instead of the left edge.

Water resistance… more or less

OnePlus 6 Waterproof:

The main weakness of the OnePlus 6 is in its resistance to water.

The company says the OnePlus 6 is more water resistant than its predecessors: the cell phone withstands drizzle and accidental drops to the toilet, but it would not resist being submerged in water.

OnePlus 6 waterproof
OnePlus 6 resistance to water @ Wazobiatech

In addition, the OnePlus 6 does not have an IP67 certification (up to 1 meter deep) as the Huawei P20 Pro and iPhone X, or IP68 (up to 1.5 meters deep) as the Galaxy S9 and LG G7 ThinQ.

Although a certification is not everything, it does offer enough confidence to take a little more risk and not depend so much on luck. Its predecessor also did not have a water resistance certification, but this feature has become so common in high-end smartphones and even some mid-range ones that makes it clear that the company made this sacrifice to lower its cost.

OnePlus 6: Performance

Base characteristics:

OnePlus 6 Galaxy S9 Plus LG G7 ThinQ iPhone X Huawei P20 Pro OnePlus 5T
Processor 2.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (eight cores) / 2.7GHz Samsung Exynos 9810 (eight cores) 2.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (eight cores) / 2.7GHz Samsung Exynos 9810 (eight cores) 2.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (eight cores) 2.39GHz Apple A11 Bionic (six cores) 2.4GHz Kirin 970 (eight cores) 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (eight cores)

The OnePlus 6 offers excellent performance and there is very little that one could criticize or complain about. Like its predecessor, the OnePlus 6 is one of the fastest and most fluid smartphones you can buy and perhaps even the most fluid.

In our performance tests, this was just what he showed, achieving markers that were similar to the Galaxy S9 and LG G7 ThinQ. Where it excelled was in the graphics processing, but in that aspect, it was very similar to the Sony Xperia XZ2.

OnePlus 6 performance display
OnePlus 6 performance display for gamers @ Wazobiatech

In daily use, the OnePlus 6 behaved excellently, but this year there is less difference between its performances compared to smartphones like the Galaxy S9. Last year, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T were clearly faster in daily use compared to the Galaxy S8, but the Galaxy S9 Plus to the OnePlus 6 is not much difference. This is one aspect in which the OnePlus 6 made the least difference this year. Even, I have noticed on occasion that the detection of the finger on the touchscreen is not as fluid or does not always have the same quick response from the Galaxy S9 Plus.

OnePlus 6: Battery life

The OnePlus 6 still has a very reliable battery. It lasted all day: I listened to music for a couple of hours, surfed the Internet and social networks, and made a few calls a day.

In our battery life tests, the OnePlus 6 managed to last 15 hours and 45 minutes. Although this is good, this represents a duration less than the 17 hours and 35 minutes that its predecessor achieved.

Another important criticism is that the OnePlus 6 is not compatible with wireless charging, a feature that has become very common in high-end cell phones or who want to compete to be the best on the market.

However, the OnePlus 6 compensates for this with its fast charge called Dash Charge, which is the fastest I’ve tried. With this fast charge, I managed to charge the OnePlus 6 from 0 to 60 percent in about 35 minutes. To load from 0 to 100 percent it takes a little more than an hour. Dash Charge is still very impressive despite not evolving since its initial release and I am still surprised how effective it is after using other cell phones.

OnePlus 6: Cameras – Optical stabilization, 480fps video, front portrait

Camera comparison:

Frontal camera 16 megapixels 8 megapixels (f / 1.7) 8 megapixels (f / 1.9) 7 megapixels (TrueDepth Camera) 24 megapixels 16 megapixels

When you look at the specifications of the OnePlus 6 cameras everything seems to be intact compared to what the OnePlus 5T had.

However, despite maintaining its combination of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel cameras, the OnePlus 6 integrates optical image stabilization and a 19 percent larger sensor in the main (the first of these cameras). This means that the smartphone could take clearer photos in low light situations and help the photos to be less blurred by the natural movement of our hands.

OnePlus 6 Camera sharpness
OnePlus 6 Camera sharpness

The other novelties include the possibility of taking photos with a blurred background (portraits) both with the rear cameras and with the front camera of 16-megapixels (although this will come with an update).

In addition, this OnePlus phone allows recording slow-motion video at 480fps in HD resolution, instead of 120fps in HD resolution offered by its predecessor.

Regarding the quality of the photos, the quality of the photos are good and an improvement over their predecessor. With good lighting, the OnePlus 6 achieves photos with more detail and better colours. In low light, the OnePlus 6 captures faster, more accurate photos with more details and better colours than before.

An important improvement I noticed is that in the portrait photos the OnePlus 6 manages to capture much better moving objects or people moving at the time of capture, even on different occasions it was faster to capture those objects than the Galaxy S9 Plus.

The portrait photos offer a good blur, but like most cameras, it often makes some parts of objects blurry. The Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2 are the best in this modality, even though the blurred background sometimes is not so even.

In regular photos against the Pixel 2 XL and the Galaxy S9 Plus, the OnePlus 6 manages to compete well with them, but the visual noise is more present. In addition, the smartphone of Samsung and Google managed better light sources than the OnePlus 6, making difficult photos come out with light extensions or changing the quality of the image.

As for video recording, the OnePlus 6 also does a good job to stabilize the image by our movement and the colours, detail and sound are relatively good.

In general, the OnePlus 6 photos capture good detail and are good enough for most users. However, sometimes the OnePlus 6 tries to over saturate the colours or exaggerate the edges of the objects a little.

Gestures of navigation, game mode, reading mode and more functions

The OnePlus 6 integrates Android navigation buttons on the screen as its predecessor but also allows you to hide this bar to enable navigation controls through gestures – similar to what the iPhone X offers and equal to what the company has tried from the latest beta versions of Android Oreo for the OnePlus 5T.

For instance, the OnePlus allows you to return to Home by sliding up, you can swipe up to open the screen of recent apps. In addition, you can slide up from the bottom right or left to return.

These gestures work well and allow you to better enjoy the entire screen of this beautiful smartphone, but still need work and have a learning curve. While returning or going to start work without problems, opening recent apps is slow and not as fluid as what the iPhone X offers.

Even when I wrote quickly the smartphone assumed that I was trying to use one of those gestures and hiding the keyboard or taking me out of the app.

The game mode (Gaming Mode), previously known as Gaming DND, allows notifications to interrupt but also improves latency to have a better experience. In addition, the cellular system automatically reduces the amount of data assigned to each app in the background, while giving priority to the data that can be used by the video game you are playing.

Furthermore, the OnePlus 6 sustains the attractive reading mode, shortcuts through gestures (O, V, S, M, W) on the lock screen (off) and a nighttime theme like its predecessor. In addition, you can protect with password or fingerprint reader access to different apps.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 6 is still compatible only with GSM, but now it is compatible with 40 bands of this class in the North American and European version, while the Asian version has compatibility with 37 GSM bands. The OnePlus 6 is an unlocked smartphone, so it does not necessarily depend on an operator’s unlocking system.

In addition, it has two SIM card slots (DSDS) with support for LTE networks in both. This way you can see the OnePlus 6 eyebrow up close.

It is the first with Android P beta

The OnePlus 6 is one of the first cell phones that is compatible with Android P beta; there are only about eight devices currently compatible with this version of Android, in addition to the Pixel. This is the first time that Google allows third-party (non-Google) phones to test the next generation of Android.

This is good so do not be interested in the beta version of Android P because this means that they are ahead of the development of this update for their cell phones once the final version of the operating system is available. That said, it’s not clear how soon the OnePlus 6 could receive this Android P update, but it could be shortly after the Pixel 2.

Conclusion

Once again, the Chinese company manufactured one of the best smartphones on the market, but its sacrifices and shortcomings in front of the flagship phones of other companies are clear.

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T managed to virtually refine the design of the cell phone to compete with the best with an average camera, but with a price of $399 and $439.

With the OnePlus 5 and 5T, the company not only increased the price to $479 and $499, but it also became much more common to find cell phones with water resistance and wireless charging, features that OnePlus cell phones did not have.

In 2018, these features have already begun to be expected in flagship phones and although I consider wireless charging to be less relevant because the OnePlus 6’s fast charging is the best there is, water resistance without certification does not offer confidence. In addition, the cameras of the most expensive flagship phones have improved a lot to make more difference with this cell phone. Inclusive, it is increasingly common to find cell phones with double speakers that offer a better sound quality than the OnePlus 6.

If you have OnePlus 5T I do not think it’s worth buying the OnePlus 6 and if you have the OnePlus 5 the only great benefit you would get is in the design and some specific improvements in the cameras. If you have OnePlus 3T or older it is worth upgrading.

Compared to other cell phones on the market, the OnePlus 6 is positioned just like its predecessors as the cell phone indicated for those who want one of the best phones at a relatively reasonable price.

However, its price increase brings it closer to the other flagship phones and its sacrifices for that price are becoming more evident, so it is not a clear alternative as were the OnePlus One and the OnePlus 3 and 3T.
