Oppo returns to Europe and does so by challenging the competitors with its new flagship: the Find X. Oppo has always stood out for innovation, is a daring brand and who loves to propose something new in their devices. This is also the case of Find X, who will have to face several of his compatriots: Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor and OnePlus are waiting for him on the way.
Oppo Find X: A price that is scary
With the presentation of June 19 in Paris, the Oppo Find X immediately acquires the European passport. The flagship of the Chinese company will be available for purchase in Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands from August at a price of 999 euros. It will arrive in blue and burgundy colours.
The brand has also launched a version made in collaboration with Lamborghini that raises the price to 1699 euros (unlike the basic model, has 512 GB instead 256GB of internal memory and uses the technology of Super Vooc charging). The price of the Find X is not very modest, even if compared to the more expensive flagships of 2018. Will it be too risky to convince European users?
Oppo Find X: A design out of the ordinary
With the arrival of Find X, Oppo tries to change the concept of a smartphone. On this occasion, the Chinese brand is not limited to copying the iPhone X (how many do?) but opts for a unique design. And using this term in the world of smartphones today is not so easy.
Your smartphone is made of curved 3D glass at the front and back. Ahead it stands out that the edges around the screen are almost nonexistent, resulting in a screen/body ratio of 93.8%. There is no sign of the notch: the space on the front panel is occupied by completing the Panoramic Art Display (this is the official name). But the main surprise is hidden in the upper part of the phone, which moves.
If we turn on the smartphone and open the camera application, the top part of the Find X moves, exposing the back of the dual camera (with LED flash) in the middle. On the front, we observe the camera dedicated to the selfie, which is also used to unlock the smartphone through facial recognition. It should be noted that the cameras come out pretty fast. When these are not uncovered, the Find X looks like a thin glass plate that shows the logo of the brand on the back.
A stylistic choice that is different from the usual ones that at first glance is impressive (although on the front, with the screen off, the Find X reminded me of Samsung’s Galaxy S line). In case you’re wondering, the headphone jack is located at the top.
The solidity of this design in the long term will only be known with daily use, but I cannot deny that Oppo with its Find X has managed to surprise me, solving one of the problems that most new smartphones have, the camera that stands out. Thanks, Oppo!
Oppo Find X: Where is the fingerprint reader?
We expected to find the fingerprint reader under the screen, as Huawei does in the Mate RS Porsche Design, but Oppo has decided not to offer this function. A minimalist design in front and behind, which only leaves space for the 3D facial scanner integrated into the pop-up of the front camera.
By just swiping your finger across the lock screen, you will activate O-Face 3D Structured Light, unlocking your smartphone and accessing device content. The 3D light module allows to project 15 thousand points and create an accurate model of the user’s face and then compare it with the one recorded in the system.
Opposing to what Huawei did with the Mate RS, Oppo pushes its users to try this new unlocking system, which should remain safer than the traditional fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, we could not prove its speed: we hope it does not disappoint in daily use.
Not finding the notch in the new high-end smartphones is becoming an adventure. There are exceptions, such as Samsung for example and Oppo with the new Find X. The Chinese flagship has decided to get rid of it, as Vivo Nex S has already done.
This means offering users a huge screen display percentage, as well as free of clutter and frames. The front camera for the selfie only enters the scene when necessary, and we can say the same thing about the sensor that allows you to unlock the device recognizing the face of the user.
With a format of 19: 9 and 6.42 inches, the screen will delight fans of video games and fans of television series, movies and multimedia content in general. Oppo in its Find X uses a double-edge curved OLED panel with FHD + resolution, which at first glance seems to offer deep colours and deep blacks.
Oppo Find X: Snapdragon 845 as a quality guarantee
The hardware components of the Oppo Find X are also up to the flagship of 2018: the Snapdragon GPU 845 and the Adreno 630 run inside the device along with 8 GB of RAM and it’s up to 256 GB of internal memory. The Qualcomm processor has already shown us before that it is capable of achieving excellent results, but the implementation of software also plays an important role (and we know very well that this is often a critical aspect in Chinese-made smartphones).
The Oppo Find X runs Android 8.1 Oreo with the housing interface ColorOS 5.1 (the patches have been updated in May, but it is a pre-production model) that slightly reminds iOS from the graphics point of view. The update to Android P will arrive, being already available in beta. Google Assistant and Google Lens are also present. At the software level, there are some new features that come in the form of intelligent functions, possible thanks to the Qualcomm chip, which seems to duplicate some features already offered by Assistant. It will be interesting to try the software and the integrated gestures of the smartphone.
Oppo Find X: Double retractable camera and 3D selfies
When you start the camera application, the Oppo Find X shows a dual camera compatible with the LED flash. The photographic module consists of two sensors, one of 20MP with aperture f / 2.0 and another of 16MP with f / 2.0. It has an optical image stabilizer and also includes artificial intelligence, which allows recognizing objects and framed subjects to optimize the result.
On the front, we find a target of 25 MP with an aperture of f / 2.0. Oppo has focused a lot on selfies and the camera is able to create them in 3D, which allows selecting different types of light. The Chinese manufacturer has also boarded the Animoji car for those who have renamed Emoji. Yes with the same concept as we have seen in Apple and Samsung.
Oppo Find X: Integrated VOOC fast charging
For those who know Oppo, the VOOC Flash Charge is not a novelty, it has also been integrated into the new flagship of the house. The Find X hides inside a non-removable 3730 mAh battery, which should be rechargeable in about 90 minutes.
Oppo Find X: Innovation is expensive
Finally something new in the world of smartphones! An interesting design, an even more optimized screen and a technical sheet worthy of any other top of the high range of 2018. Benefits? You have to test them more thoroughly, especially on the software side, often the weak point of Chinese devices.
The waterproofing certification is missing, but the Oppo Find X is compatible with Assistant, Google Lens and also includes a retractable camera that is pleasing to the eye. A priori is an interesting player that I’m looking forward to seeing in action in the field, although the price, I must admit, is a bit scary.
And you, do you think the Find X will impress in Europe? What do you think about the design of Oppo’s new flagship?
